Khartoum American School is implementing a new Learning Management System (LMS) called Schoology. The technology coordinator is preparing online materials to allow the staff and faculty to be ready before the school starts in August 2020. The coordinator has looked into some training videos from youtube channel and chose one video that will be very informative and good for learning.
The formal way of learning: I had an online session with two representatives who demonstrated the basics interface and how the application works. Then they set up a sandbox for our school to practice how to use it.
Informal way: Learning by exploration through the sandbox.
The demonstration session took about an hour and a half. I sensed it could be done in a shorter time. With the adult learning theory aspect, I felt like my time was a little wasted here. However, my knowledge and experience in using a similar application before had eased a lot in making the learning go well.
In this scenario, I took into consideration the adult theory learning principles. According to Knowles, adult learning theory (Andragogy) is different than pedagogy in the following ways:
Need for Knowledge
Motivation
Willingness
Foundation or Experience
Self-Direction
Orientation to Learning
To have substantial experience with learning how to use the new LMS system. I will consider all of the above for sure, but I will focus on these:
Need for Knowledge: Teachers need to know "why" they need to learn the new tool. I will explain how the new system will make their job much easier
Self-Direction: who want to take charge of the learning journey. They are independent beings who want to feel in control.
Orientation to Learning: Teachers will have hands-on to explore the "do" part.
