In the late nineteenth century, Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov was experimenting with his dogs when he discovered what he called classical conditioning (or stimulus-response). While he knew that the dogs naturally salivated for food, he noticed that after presenting food and a usually neutral stimulus (like the ringing of a bell) repeatedly, the dogs began to salivate as a result of the "neutral stimulus" alone. Through classical conditioning (the repeated presentation of food and a ringing bell together), the dogs had learned to associate the sound of the bell with food.
In the nineteenth century, the psychologist J.B Watson built more into the concept of Pavlov. Watson suggested psychology be studied through objective, observable behaviors rather than subjective, internal thoughts, and consciousness. This concept is known as "Behaviorism."
B.F. Skinner, another psychologist, added to the concept of behaviorism. He believes that psychology is more eligible studied by observing behaviors of individuals and making connections between their behaviors and their environments before providing any incentives or stimuli.
Behaviorists explain motivation in terms of positive and negative reinforcement, especially in the learners' behaviors. Human learners tend to avoid responses that are associated with punishment or unpleasant consequences, such as poor grades or adverse feedback. However, if the answer is definite, they will be more likely to repeat that behavior.
My senior will be related to implementing a new Learning Management System(LMS) in school. Suppose the school is implementing a new LMS system and consider teachers' behavior in using the new system. After we introduce the new system and go over training materials with teachers, we provide a checklist with performance tasks that teachers must do before they get paid their salary for August (before the school starts).
The tasks will require teachers to create at least one class in the new LMS system with a minimum of one lesson.
The incentive will be doing the checklist by completing the performance tasks. The teacher will submit to the administrator who will approve the clearance for payment.
The response will be doing the checklist and submit it to the administrators in order to get paid.
Pros:
The teacher has to learn and practice creating the new classes in the new LMS system
The teachers will ensure that they practice enough to be able to do the tasks assigned on the checklist.
Cons:
The teacher may feel that they are pushed to work on something new and may not ask for help.
